The Daughters of Wisdom have ministered to persons in the deaf community since 1812 at their school in Larnay, France. In 1926 the Daughters of Wisdom opened Our Lady of Wisdom Institute in Bogota, Colombia for Deaf and Blind students. This was the first school for special needs students in all of South America. Later, the Daughters of Wisdom opened similar schools in Medellin, Bucamanga and Barranquilla, Colombia. At one time these schools were thriving.
For many years a group of Deaf Nuns, the Hermanitas of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady affiliated with the Daughters of Wisdom in South America. The coordinator of this community, for several years, was Sister Rosemary Gaffney, DW, presently living in New York. I am grateful to Sister Rosemary making me aware of this wonderful part of our history and ministry as Daughters of Wisdom.
